Job 31 Man

Job 31 Man

June 19, 2022

The annual favorite of sermon topics for Mother’s Day is “The Proverbs 31 Woman”. Well today I would like to start a new tradition, but for Father’s Day. I want to encourage us all to consider what a “Job 31 Man” would be.

We will look at select passages from the chapter but the verse guiding the sermon’s outline is found in 1 John 2:15-17

The first warning from the apostle John is “the lust of the flesh”.
    Job 31:1, 9-12
Job, like Jesus, peels back the root of adultery/fornication to that first lingering look. A godly man will avert his eyes and imagination and a godly woman will not do anything to encourage the straying eyes.
Let’s be clear on how the Bible defines fornication/adultery. Hebrews 13:4 four claims the marriage bed (intercourse between a husband and a wife) is pure, all else is defiled and will be judged. Our current culture’s nonsense on what marriage is sometimes unbiblical. Gen 2:24 shows the Creator’s blueprint to be one man, one woman, one lifetime.
But America has plummeted into a culture of immorality and death. Prov 5:3-5

James Dobson said in the 70’s that the dam of moral rectitude had burst and a flood of sexual wantonness was engulfing us. He was reminded of the story of the little Dutch boy plugging a hole in the dyke and thus saving his village from floodwater destruction. The church was like the boy, but we let down our guard, adopted secular humanistic ideals and now we are being swept away by lust just like our unbelieving neighbors.

The story of Charles is one of lust gone rampant and the ensuing destruction of his life and the lives of his family.
Today, young children are accessing porn sites and growing up to burn with insatiable self-centered lust. Who pays for these crimes? As always, the most vulnerable, girls and women.

John also warns about “the lust of the eyes”.
    Job 31:7, 24-28, 38-40

Now let’s be honest, things are great! New gadgets are cool! But let us never try to feed the soul with our things. 1 Timothy 6:9-10

Job 19:25-27 We cannot speak with Job’s confidence unless we feed our souls upon relationships, Christ first, and then all others in our lives.

Lastly John warns us about “the boastful pride of life”.
    Job 31:2-4; 13-15
In Micah 6:8 God explains what we already know; to be just, merciful, and humble is good for us, for others, and God’s will.
I know a couple that people will say how they love the wife, but the man is just so full of himself. The soul abhors a vacuum, so less of yourself means more of the Holy Spirit.
